Numbers and Arithmetic Operations

Type of Numbers

There are sets of numbers that are used so often that they have special names and symbols:

Naturals Numbers
The Natural Numbers or the counting numbers are whole numbers greater than zero.
Example: 1, 2, 3…

Integers

Integers are whole numbers, negative and positive, including “0”
Example:
Positive Integers: 1, 2, 3…
Non negative Integers: 0, 1, 2, 3 …
Negative Integers: -1, -2, -3…
Non positive Integers: 0, -1, -2, -3…

Rational Numbers

Rational Number is numbers that can be written as a fraction where both the top and bottom of the fraction are whole numbers.
Example:
1.5 = 3/2
0.3333… = 1/3
1.36 = 136/100
2 = 8/4

Irrational Numbers

Any number that is not a Rational Number
Example:  π √2

Real Numbers

All rational and irrational numbers. They can also be positive, negative or Zero.

Square Numbers

Square Numbers are integers that can be written as the square of some other integers, i.e. a product of an integer multiplied by it.
